What to know about opioids

Opioids are medications your doctor may prescribe to relieve moderate to severe pain. They work by reducing the perception of pain. Opioids are used to treat different kinds of pain, including pain from disease, injuries and surgical procedures. For example, a doctor might prescribe morphine if you have cancer, hydrocodone after a tooth extraction or Percocet after knee surgery.

Safety always comes first

Prescription opioids can be an important part of your pain management plan, but they can be highly addictive and lead to misuse. It’s important to work closely with your doctor to develop a treatment plan that balances the benefits of pain relief with the potential risks.
