Tips for managing complex health conditions

Be a good health care quarterback

Managing your health or someone else's health can be a daunting task, especially if you or someone you love has complex care needs. We're here to help you be a good health care quarterback, which means being involved every step of the way and using your benefits to your advantage—like a pro. From finding the right doctors to avoiding surprise medical bills, we'll help you take charge and feel confident in your health care choices.

Team up with your doctor

Did you know that 4 out of 5 Americans withhold important information from their doctor that could be vital to their health? Your doctor should be someone you trust—someone you're comfortable with and can ask questions. If you don't understand something, call a time-out and ask your doctor to slow down or clarify.

Both your primary care doctor and your specialists should be your partners in health. It's easy to look for specialists, such as rheumatologists, cardiologists and other specialty providers, who are in your network. Just sign in at regence.com or on the Regence app to find a doctor. You can filter by location, gender, languages spoken and whether virtual care is an option.

Have a game plan

Say it's the weekend or after hours and you can't get to your doctor or specialist. It's helpful to know ahead of time that you've got options for care. For urgent, non-emergency situations—like if your child with asthma comes down with a cold—you can go to an urgent care center, or you can use telehealth. During your virtual visit, a board-certified doctor provides a diagnosis and can send a prescription to your pharmacy. Or, if you need to pick up medications or groceries at the store, you can go to a retail clinic for convenient, walk-in services.

Planning ahead can help you make the right decision when the unexpected happens. To learn more about your options, check out when to go to the ER, urgent care or use telehealth.

Tackle your costs

One way to stay in control of your health care is by being cost-conscious. To compare prices across hospitals and clinics in your network, sign in and estimate your costs. You can also review your claims and EOBs, and if something looks wrong, call Customer Service.

Medications breaking the bank? Try Research medications tool, a comparison tool that shows you drug costs based on your benefits. You can also prepare for health care expenses and save by creating a health care budget and making the most of your Regence Advantages.

Be proactive

Just because you go to the doctor regularly doesn't mean you're getting all the screenings you need. The good news is in-network preventive care is 100% covered and can help you stay on top of your health.

Pass it on

When you sign in to find a doctor, you can also read provider reviews to see what members experienced at the doctor's office. Be a team player—leave reviews to pass along your knowledge and help others know what to expect.
