Questions to consider when choosing a plan

Do you want to keep the same doctors?

With Medicare Supplement plans, you can see any doctor who accepts Medicare. With Medicare Advantage plans, you may have limited out-of-network coverage. Be sure to check if your doctors are in network for the Medicare Advantage plan you’re considering, or, if you want the freedom to choose your own doctors, you may want to go with a Medicare Supplement plan.

Which prescription medications do you currently take?

Most Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage. Before choosing a Medicare Advantage plan, it’s a good idea to see if your prescription medications are listed on the plan’s formulary, or covered drug, list. If you enroll in Original Medicare or a Medicare Supplement plan, prescription coverage is not included, but you can purchase a stand-alone prescription drug plan to help cover your medications.

Will you be traveling a lot?

Do you travel to different states to see family? If you’re frequently on the road, a Medicare Supplement plan may be a good fit for you since they aren’t tied to a network. Planning a trip abroad? In most cases, Original Medicare won’t cover your care while you’re outside the country. Some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans provide coverage for traveling abroad—be sure to check the details of your specific plan.

Are additional benefits important to you?

Original Medicare does not include routine dental or vision care, or hearing aids—so you may want to consider what level of care you’ll need for your teeth, eyes and ears. You’ll also want to think about whether you’re interested in options such as 24/7 virtual care, alternative care or well-being programs that can help you stay healthy in the years ahead.
